In the picture above the 6 man 'brown' unit plus one file from the blue unit are firing at the 4 bases to their front (between the two measuring sticks). The brown unit is fragmented. It had 3 front rank bases and 3 rear rank bases. The three front rank bases each have a dice, the blue unit has 1 front rank dice, two of the brown back rank bases have a dice, the third brown back rank bases combines with the blue rear rank base to give another dice. So there are 5 dice that have all or part of their dice from the brown unit (yellow dice in the picture) and one dice from the blue unit alone. So the brown unit has 5 full or partial dice and the blue unit one dice. The browns loses 1 per 2 so lose 2 dice. So there are 4 dice shooting. Is this correct?

Yes I think so. If the brown chaps were on their own, they would not be able to use the third base in the second rank as those are 1 per 2. but with the other back rank base from the other BG he combines into a single dice. And you don't lose it as you only lose 1 per 2 for fragged.
