A routing unit that recovers morale is spent . How to "spent" an artillery unit ?

We use spent counters. We spend all that time and money don't want to be popping off bases.
other way I guess would be to go with one gun model and an empty base. As long as your blank base is the same size what difference should it make? Definitely not as good looking as a full battery though.

Page 69 says "An Infantry or Cavalry unit can also have a permanent state of Spent. This occurs for any Infantry or Cavalry unit that has rallied after being Broken.
Page 72 says "All Broken units that rally lose a single base permanently. This is to signify that the unit is now Spent."
The rule on p.69 is somewhat redundant if it is just a more specific instance of the general rule on p.72. But we can't rule out the possibility that one of the two rules should have been deleted in the proofreading stage. Something to tidy up in version 2?

I suppose they were trying to make the point that spent is a permanent cohesion state, then tell you how you become spent.
You are right it could probably use a cleaning up in V2
