Impetuous charges

We had some interesting situations in our Waterloo game .

So The british player having some impetuous cavalry units did not want to keep them Under control and let them loose ( wanting to cry havoc ) ! . In one of the situations the path was blocked by a routing unit still there so he simply went trough the routing unit . As it was routing, no test for burst trough had to be done . We discussed the possibility to do it and decided to allow the charge . What is your opinion .

Same situation but accross an obstacle ( a river where you had to test to go trough ) . Being impetuous they ciuld charge where no one else could charge a test being needed ?

Your opinion ?

it might need some clarifications for FOGN2 :D

You cant ever interpenetrate through a routing unit so he could not have charged through them.
Not sure they could have charged through the river either.

To make an impetuous charge the charging unit still has to be able to contact the enemy otherwise no charge, impetuous or otherwise. In both those cases no test to keep them controlled would be needed as until those routers moved out of the way there was no charge path so no charge opportunity existed. Once the routers had moved off and were no longer blocking then it would be business as usual and impetuous charges can occur.
As for the river in this case you would need a bridge and the cav would have to be in a column to charge an enemy on the opposite bank (column to use the bridge) so unless these two things happen no possible charge so no test for impetuous charges.
If you can't charge your target there is no reason to test since the charge situation does not exist.

I am not so sure about the routing unit as an impetuous unit might charge trough a friendly unit, even if it would be a burst trough !

Check the rules you can't move through a routing unit period. A unit making any kind of move can not interpenetrate a routing unit.
To make a charge you have to be able to make a normal move, which you can not make through routers, so routers would block any charge move so no impetuous charge through routers.

p. 29 (top left column): ...following interpenetrations not allowed...except by impetuous that fail a test not to assault...assaults which pass through any broken troops...

Which raises another question : what if the controlling player declines to take a test to controll his units...they will charge :D
