Medals & Heroes

Hello all. Just a quick question regarding the medals in the game. What factors determine when a unit gets a new medal or hero? Is it the kill count?
quick answer yes
long answer
100 kills to get first iron cross 2nd class
1st hero after 100 kills
2nd hero 300-1000 kills (I have been told, as I have yet to get one of these)
3rd hero greater than 1000 (I can only imagine)
Medals mean nothing just nice little addition to the game
heroes are random
