Battle lines...

Can a battle line, say, turn 90 degrees (into column) on its first move and then make a second (advance) move?
I've heard various opinions on the matter, most of which say it can't be done. However, the rules state battle lines can take a Complex Move Test (CMT), which does seem to suggest complex moving is allowed (if the test is passed)...

Hi Chris
Check out P41, Simple and Complex Moves, 1st bullet point:
"Battle lines are limited to the 'Advances' section of the table.
So your answer is clearly no.

What Rob said, and they are even more limited than that - i.e. you can't drop off and pick up BG's along the way. In essence, you start and finish shoulder to shoulder, and move straight forward or do a minor wheel.

Thank you both. I've re-read the rules (for the umpteenth time!). The provision for battle lines to take CMTs is for when they contain artillery or battle wagons, which have to test just to move...

Indeed. However, you will hardly ever see people do this since artillery and battle wagons are so slow
