Intercept

 is infantry having declared a charge forward to hit :)
:?: is cavalry wishing to intercept, which would mean moving level with :)
The question is whether it can declare an intercept.

:) :)
_____ :?: :?: :?:

The problem is that  could step forward bases to hit :?: only if the VMD roll was 6, otherwise would fall short. The question came up whether the cavalry are "being charged" because they possibly could be contacted, or does this mean they must be contactable within normal unmodified move distance for the chargers OR within the minimum possible VMD move distance?

I believe the rule intends to let the cavalry intercept when it is not in normal charge distance of the foot.

Relevant Rules:
P63 says "A battle group that is itself charged cannot intercept. This aplies even if a charge was not declared on it, if it is in the path of a charge and would be contacted (including by bases stepping forward) if no friendly battle group evaded."

if it can be ‘legally’ contacted, even if it was not one of the originally declared targets of the charge. This applies even if it can only be contacted by bases stepping forward (see below). It does not apply if, due to intervening friends, it could not be contacted even by stepping forward bases"

--> I point out this says "would . . . " and "would be ...." rather than terms indicating just a possibility.

Please let me know the correct answer here. Thanks,

Mike

What has a VMD to do with stepping forward?

If the chargers hit :) they must step forward if they can hit :?: and if they can then :?: cannot intercept - the rules are clear on this on page 63, 4th bullet down.

:?: could intercept if they would not be contacted by the step forward.

Thank, Nik, for the response. Just to confirm I got it down, is the following a correct understanding?

(1) whether or not :) VMD might later change the actual movement after an evade doesn't matter for intercept eligibility - just look at the normal charge move distance.

(2) :?: can intercept move if it starts outside the normal move distance of  OR if it is within 's normal move distance but  would be unable to legally step forward bases far enough to contact :?: (i.e., in the charge path, but if :) stays in place :?: could not be hit so interception is OK)

Thanks

Mike
