Mission "Investigation" - how to get past it?

I am liking Star Hammer alot... but on the "Investigation" mission - the one where you are sent to protect/escort the journalist - I'm stuck. And I'm playing it on "Easy." (embarrassing, I know)

I've tried it twice... first time, once I rendezvoused with the journalist's ship, I could see the tons of enemy ships & opted to try and run. The mission says to "Protect the..." (whatever that ship's name is) so I thought just get all ships out of harm's way. No good. The enemy ships pursued, started just picking me apart from the rear... got my smallest ship, so I quit. Dam. It can't be this hard... I'm playing on "Easy" after all... can it?

2nd time through... the map was a little different, and the enemy forces were divited into two groups. So I ramped up speed and moved to quickly engage the smaller of the two... redirecting power to shields/weapons as we got close enough to exchange fire ... and in the first turn, they took my Destroyer down to 1 HP... 1 HP !!! WTH?

Can anyone tell me how to get past this mission?

Never mind... just got it. :)

I turned my entire fleet toward the smaller group & engaged them, trying to take them out quickly. One fellow gamer on Facebook said to swing Raiders around behind them, and I did that. I managed to take them out, and still have enough firepower / endurance (shields, hull points, etc.) to take on the other force. It was a tough fight (even on "Easy") but I did it. :)
