Coral Sea US Destroy Aircraft Secondary Objective

What is the trick in achieving this objective. I just replayed the scenario, because I got better at carrier tactics and now I managed to sink both carriers and get every other primary and secondary objective - except the aircraft. I sank a carrier which had at least one plane on board, I saw it flying to the carrier and the it was gone. But I thought by sinking the carrier, the plane inside should also be destroyed or does it not count?
