R&D question

Just curious to hear from other players about what level of R&D on rockets and crewed spacecraft you go to prior to launching. Do you generally wait till 80% or better or do you risk a lower level to gain time, and if so how low, and what kind of successes (or failures) have you had?

Hello bumble,

Notice that the reliability of a given component is evaluated on each mission step so, for example, if you have five consecutive mission steps that use the same mission component and it has a reliability of 80%, the probability of successfully going through all five steps is: 0.8 ^ 5 = 0.32768 => 32.768%. An 80% reliability is not very safe so, unless the mission component is used in one or two steps throughout the mission, you should be aiming for a higher value before using it.

Cheers,
