I am going by the arrows at a right angle captioned "Full move straight forwards" and "shift sideways" on p45. I don't believe any shifty diagonal moves are allowed in Field of Glory.

We have never specified the path. The bases just end up in the shifted position. Is there a situation where it matters? The entire move with the shift has to be outside 6MU of the enemy.

There are some cases where it matters, e.g.

The diagonal does not go within 6 MU of enemy, but straight ahead followed by a slide does;
THe diagonal passes through friendly troops but straight ahead followed by a slide does not.

Doesn't the rule say something about how the shift can occur either at the beginning or the end of the straight move? That would solve your question by making the diagonal irrelavent.
