Worst BG Performance

In my last game I had a BG that must come close to the worst performance a unit could achieve.
It was a BG of Lt Slingers, during my turn it moved up to an archer unit ready to ‘unleash hell’. I rolled first and missed completely, must have lost all their ammo in a marbles competition before the battle. The archers fired back and got 3 hits, I tested for cohesion and failed badly, dropping 2 levels, passed the death roll. Next turn, the archers declared a charge, so being fragmented I had to roll another cohesion test, failed and immediately routed.
The best part was on the variable rout move I rolled a ‘1’ while the archers rolled a ‘6’ hitting the slingers in the back. The rest of my army went onto victory and the slingers were sold into slavery after the battle.

The BG took more than 2 hits, from our understanding of the rules that is enough.

Poor blighters, they should have only dropped one level - you can only drop 2 levels in testing for close combat in which you took at least 2 more hits than you gave.

They sound like my Camels , not a single base has ever died , but they have been broken and run off the table in 2 from 2 battles.

Perhaps the reason for the old slogan "I'd walk a mile for a Camel."

Arrg, you are right, they should have only dropped 1 level from archery not 2. Oh well another rule I got wrong, I am use to it after trying to learn DBMM and giving up.

As in so many wars the troops are doing their best, it is the general who screws it up ?

In looking at Camels I can't possibly find a reason to take them. For that reason. Rerolling 6's is bad for combat. BUT absoutely INSANE for Coheison Tests and at 10 points not exactly a deal for "poor" troops.

Well, not so much one performance as several strung together - I at one point lost 4 BG's of Elephants before they made it into contact.

Well this takes the cake ....
A doubles game:
My partner reveals his 6b's Thuerophoroi (MF) in the woods to some approaching 8b's Bosporan javelinmen (LF).
In the next impact phase the Theuro's charge into the javelinmen, who elect to take the charge since they are in rough ground. The resulting combat will make you cry.
Javelinmen get 3 dice (woo hoo) and roll 3 hits. The Theuro's roll 6 dice and score 1 hit.
The Thuero's test cohesion, roll a '3' with -1 1hp3b, and -1 2morethan, resulting in a double drop in cohesion to "fragmented".
They subsequently rout in the next melee phase when they loose the combat ... flank collapse in 1 turn.
It didn't really lose us the battle (that was happening elsewhere) but it sure was embarrassing.

Somehow I always manage to pass my cohesion however I am notoriosly unlucky on the death rolls. Currently I run at a 70% chance to die and 30% chance to survive which isnt really good considering you get +2 to save when being shot at. That means that I roll plenty of 1's. I have had Bow dissapear from dying but not due to cohesion.
Nevertheless the game mechanics throw up these situations which make things very interesting and enjoyable (when its happening to your opponent). Seeing bow rout a MF is priceless. I havent had the opportunity to rout HF with bow.........yet
