Are there any scenario making tutorials? Specifically ones that cover the AI setup, event triggers, and mission objectives.

Not to my knowledge.

I found the best way to learn the finer/more complex points of the editor is to load official scenarios and check them out.

If you want to start with something relatively simple, you can load one of my custom scenarios.
The victory objectives and triggers/events are pretty basic in those.

How hard would it be to string together single player scenarios into a campaign? To keep it simple, my first thought would be to use existing scenarios without modification. An example might be a USMC campaign consisting of Guadalcanal, Betio, Cape Gloucester, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I did the New Britain campaign as an experiment to see if I could get it to work.
Copied the US campaign to the my documents...Campaigns folder and edited the data.cmp and text_english.txt files.
There are a number additional files a left untouched to be safe.

You really want to use scenarios that are single-player.
Most of the work will be tailoring the individual scenarios,ie removing units that will be replaced by your initial core units plus purchases.
You need to add deployment hexes for land/air naval units.

Open up the three New Britain scenarios (Arawe, Cape Cloucester, Talasea) in the editor. This campaign is simple compared to the official ones.
Or you can check out the tutorial campaign.

Gotta go....
