Flank Marches

I am playing an historical scenario, created by Odenathus ( I think ), which had a flanking force arrive. This was totally unexpected by myself until deployment, and totally unexpected by my opponent 
as neither of us had played the scenario before ( which is how I like to play these ).
I won't mention the name as it may spoil the game for those who have not played it as yet.
Question re flanking forces in scenarios.
Are they able to be programmed to appear at different times and places ?
Once you have played the scenario it is unfair to play someone who hasn't, or if both have played and know of it, the game is spoiled somewhat.
