GC 42-43 West: Core Unit and prestige problem after Nazaire

Dear all,

I couldn't find any answer to the question asked hereinafter in the forum so far so I am opening a new thread as putting so much time in my GC this is of high importance for me.

I played all GC scenarios until East 43 and now instead of finishing the East 44 and 45 GCs decided to go for the GC West 42-43 since I wanted to avoid seeing Russian tanks all over for a couple of scenarios. ;-)
And I was right since this again is great work and brings some variety. But I have got a problem with my core status.

Before starting the first scenario St. Nazaire my huge and strong 41 army is ready to deploy and I have over 10k prestige. But after Nazaire all Units except the 9 or so I selcted for Nazaire are gone and even worse all the prestige. Now the Allies kick my a.. which is a nice challenge but I really would like to have some of my units dedicated for various operations such as Fighters and AT Units I did not bring to the first scenario of the GC West 42-43.

Finally my question: Is that a bug, did I something wrong or is it supposed to be like that?

Thanks for your help.

BR Pip

It's designed like that, but you will get a large amount of units as reinforcements throughout the campaign.

Thank you so much for the information. Ok. Challenge accepted ;-)

Then I will redo it from Nazaire on with a new unit selection because I didn't choose my best team for other units to gain some experience.

If I may give you some advice...

If I recall correctly you can retain 8 CORE units + 4 SE units.

Choose them based on unit Type and experience/heroes acquired.
It won't matter if your unit with more experience and better heroes is a Panzer II and you have to leave a Panzer IV behind.
Since you will loose all your Prestige anyway you can use it to upgrade your most experienced units to the best equipment available.

hi, unexpected and hard choices indeed! :)
(i just bought the DLC, was tired of eastern front)

So, i rather keep only my heroes? (like Mr Hans ruedel the bomberman). too bad for my 21k prestige ^^

two questions :
- the text says "if you import from the 41 DLC", it means with another core you could have more, or just that whatever happens, you'll have 8 units?
- i hesitate between a +2 defense tank and a +6 initiative BF 110 for my 8th unit. I'm not convinced by the later. Any advice?

thanks! :)

You have limited core slots and your prestige will get set to a maximum of 2,000 at the end of Turn 1 of West 42, though you will get reinforcement units and more core slots in later scenarios.

That means it pays to look at your heroes and upgrade all the ones you like to the best units in that class. You can convert, upgrade, overstrength as much as you like because you will lose any excess prestige at the end of Turn 1.

As core slots are pretty limited Rudel is probably better as a 110 than a Stuka, so he doesn't need a fighter escort. You probably want to bring one decent fighter, but if you have a move hero or +3 attack AA unit that could be an alternative (it would best be an 88 as ground units are limited). More than two planes seems to leave not enough ground units for me, though there are times when a strategic bomber could come in handy.

Oleh Dir makes a good grenadier or pioneer and the rest is a matter of personal preference. I convert all the tanks I bring to Panzer 4s, and bring arty with move heroes - speed is good in some of the early west scenarios - and waver between bringing best attacking infantry or best defensive infantry. Either way they get converted to grenadiers before they arrive.

The first 42 West scenario can be quite hard work to get a DV on, but some of these can be good fun with a lot of challenges on how to split your forces without leaving too many gaps and weak points - the ability to move around quickly can save the day. Good luck!

thanks for the reply, i won very easily with the +3 move hero (i panicked when docks swarmed with paras, but they have low defenses)

- is there a way to check a hero at deployment screen? i see only the bonuses if i mouseover
- can you leave the primary objective north west to gain more prestige back? anyway, what is the effect of enemy taking a highlighted square? (except he gains prestige i guess, and you have shame on you)

I've posted this elsewhere but I think it applies here too:

Keep in mind that you should probably not use the same core for grand campaign 42 East as you do for 42/43 West. They are totally different campaigns and you need to plan your core for each starting in 1939. East requires you to have a huge number of 2-3 star units of every possible class so that you can fight the big battles and get the right compositions for the smaller ones. East also requires that you start 1943 with 30k + in the bank. West requires you to have 8 super powerful units with as many heroes as you can, and to have 4 SE tanks. You need the SE tanks because they take all your money away for the west, and the prestige cap is absolutely crippling late game, meaning that you can't get money if you deploy too many valuable units. Fortunately, SE tanks aren't counted.

Hi,
The best way to get rid of that nasty prestige cap ist to turn it off in the gamerules.pzdat.

Well, i'm in sicily atm and with heroes the scenarios are challenging, but not hard.
prestige is very tight, which is a good thing. One trick i used is to disband one SE once i reach 4 (so i got 4 Pz, then a free tiger ;)
enjoying it very much, i hope it doesnt turn to 40+ units battles like on the eastern front, which gets a bit repetitive.
