I am aware that archers do get re-rolls if they are superior (i.e Cretans etc). Does this roll go up by one when a commander is attached during the shooting phase?

No. Commanders only add their re-roll benefit during melee.

Rather makes sense though. I can certainly see a Commander exhorting his troops to fight harder, hang on just a litttle while longer, return to the fray etc, but it is a stretch of the imagination to think he could encourage archers to shoot straighter:-)

What about support archers shooting during the impact phase as second or third rank ?
If the general fights with the BG, do both first rank and support shooters benefit from the General 's presence ?

Well, if they do it's a bit off! Those third rank LF/second rank MF/HF won't shoot any better just cos Sir is doing his bit in the front rank!

But if he's encouraging that third rank ( that cant really see the enemy that clearly) and making it "improve" its shooting, he should be able to encourage other archers in other circumstances, or encourage neither in either situation?

I guess Sir, similarly, may encourage second-rank MF/HF when they are being charged, by giving a reroll?

I would prefer a rule which stated that commanders never add quality rerolls to any shooting dice in any phase. However, my late Roman legiones and auxilia and the their toolbox Assyrian mates are glad that the interpretation is the way it is!

It is just to avoid complicating the rules with another exception. However, it is easy to justify as his reassuring presence having an effect on their shooting in a crisis situation (effectively mitigating the -1 POA) but not in normal circumstances.

I asked the shooters. They felt their commanders are better at directing their shooting before impact than the BG leaders, but for them the main thing is that a commander fighting with them helps steady their bowels against the terrifying realization that at any moment they are going to lose the +2 bonus on death rolls.
