A few questions from a new Panzer Corps player? :)

Hi

I have recently started playing. And I have a few questions.

Is it only INF that can capture cities?

How large is a unit? I mean is every unis a Corps?

Is there a place for all mods? I would really like a mod, that give the ships and units historical named. Is there such a mod?

Thanks :)

No Inf is not the only thing that can capture cities. Anything can capture cities except artillery, anti aircraft, planes, or ships.
Everything else can capture cities.
all German units start at 10 when purchased
check out mod section on the forum
I have not downloaded any mods too busy with the main game and playing people on mp aspect of the game.
Enjoy.

As goose-2 said most land units can control hex, except Artillery and AA, but to be complete, some AA or Artillery can switch to AT mode (for ex, Flak 36, Russian Su-122). In AT mode those units can actually control flag hex. Use the Switch button or 'W' key to switch mode. Suppose you have a Flak 36 which by default is in AA mode, switch to AT mode by pressing 'W', deselect this unit by right clicking on an empty hex, then hex capture become effective. It is important to deselect the unit to make capture effective, then you can select the unit back and even switch it back to AA if you want.

Units size may vary from scenario to scenario, roughly division sized. However due to the one unit per hex nature of the game, there are some abstractions, as AA or AT units are separate from infantry or tanks, whereas IRL most units get some organic AA At or artillery, so there is not an easy direct matching of historical OoB.
For example the Grand Campaign features battle s at a zoomed in scale compared to the vanilla game. And even in the GC the size is not really constant, for example the Villers Bocage map features a close in view of M. Wittman attack in the city streets.

There are some excellent mods around.
I have played Legacy of Versailles and GTPG - both very good and with a focus on larger battles. Personally I find the scale of the battles bit overwhelming after a while, but they are really well constructed and designed.
LSSAH and Nikivdd's Alternative DLC series are also good and the battles are a bit smaller so they have a lighter more relaxing fun feel to them.
Bite Nibble Chomp seems to have an endless supply of mod ideas including WW1 and Rise of the Mongols. These have quite a different feel to the WW2 games and provide a whole extra set of challenges.
There are some other mods which aim for more historic realism, but I haven't tried these yet, so can't comment.

I'm still working on more (look for 'Imperator Romanorum'). Also I have nearly finished a scrpit for a random battle generator, so be sure to play that 100 times or more for lots of extra content!

There is no mod at this stage (I was looking for the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago), but a guy called 'dragos' has a link to a website that can generate a bunch of random names. You can then rename your units with them (or anything else) using Alt+N

Another advice: you should look on the forum how to manage your prestige.

My 1st game of the series was allied corps, and I had a tendency to overstrengthen a bit everything, even auxiliary units, and systematically use the elite replacement.
After around 10 missions I had no more prestige and was good for a restart.

Never over strength a support unit ie AA, AT etc IMO I only over strength my vanguard unit namely infantry and some major tanks as they will be taking hits and dashing out dmg. When an army get too much over strength you won't get prestige hence replacement will virtually bankrupt you in the middle of the campaign. I find that keeping even some elite unit at strength 10 is good enuf especially those that is designated as clean up crew which just go in to finish off a dmg unit usually AT some tanks and cavalry or that bike unit. Most of my arty is strength 10 only as I use them to suppress rather than killing

This is exactly the opposite strategy of what i, and from what i read here most other people are doing. Overstregthing your front unit leads to inevitable lose of said overstrength and with the costs rising per point of overstrength it gets prohibitively expensive fast. Overstregth on your artillery and bombers on the other hand usually stays there as they should not take much hits and leads to them being pretty devastating. Fighters are sometimes worth overstrengthing too as in aerial combat whoever shots first, and it's often then not your fighters, is the only one that shots.

I agree with Tarrak and I have won every battle in the Grand Campaign with DVs except for SeaLion45 on Field Marshal.
This is with some re-plays of battles of course.

This other person's advice seems perverse and self-defeating to me.

I have arrived at Stalingrad's Docks, 2nd time I play GC East, 1st one halted at Oboyan. Prestige/experience settings at 70% until 1942, then dropped it for the winter battles to 50%.
Prestige currently at 9500, still some units left to upgrade. I guess the overstrength is killing me, as I keep all units on 12/13, only using veteran replacements.
Now I understand why some players have 40k+ prestige left in 1943 or later.
Will adept my strategy therefore from now on, using the tips here and see where it gets me :-).

I'm afraid 9500 won't be enough for '43-'45. I had >100k and still didn't do that well.
Most better players can survive with about 30k

I don't think there is such a thing as "too much" prestige in the grand campaign. You have to start out from the very beginning as a penny pincher. Good luck! I need some myself too.

What difficulty settings are we speaking of then? And is such a huge difference in prestige stock only explained by not overstrengthening?
Not very encouraging LOL - all the hard work

Found one good reason I think - have been playing with advanced settings with prestige settings between 50-70% and occasionally 100% - this is higher than playing at Field Marschall which has setting of 100%.

Hello,
as now you have a 1st grasp on the game I suggest you have a look at the FAQ:
viewtopic.php?f=121&t=27283

This is series of links of discussion threads but there is much to learn there.

Also there are video from Braccada who plays the vanilla campaign and explains his movements and tactics.
It is very instructive as well.
Note that it completely spoils the campaign.

This is very long time to spend learning tips, but it will make the game much more enjoyable.

I played on Lieutenant, but I don't consider myself to be a very good player  .

The 30k recommendation is coming from people who play on Field Marshal or General.

But overstrengthening does destroy you - the game's prestige soft cap rule sets your prestige to 20% of what it should be if your core force's average cost is >800. So only your *best* (least likely to get injured) units should be set above 10 or 11.
