How about optional unit "symbols" to ...

... better help me tell apart a Zero from a Kango and whatever else white Japanese planes there are?

Also, not everyone might know that the Hayate is a fighter. Or is it a tac bomber? I was quite sure from reading about the WW2 theatre in the Pacific that it is a Fighter, but ingame I was not immediately sure what it is.
Same for Dauntless and Wildcat. I must hover over them when zoomed out, there are differences between them, definitely, but at first glance I am not sure.

This is why I would like to add an additional icon to the lower right side that helps me immediately identify a unit as Tac Bomber or Fighter, Destroyer or Cruiser, etc..

OoBPac already has the by now quite common nice symbols/icons for land units, and they are very distinct and easy to discern. But the tiny plane and ship symbols very much look the same if you don't look closely.
Maybe they can be more distinct?

I am uploading a screenshot with some modifications to show where I would place an extra icon (it could be optional, some might not like it). I would also like to ask if the team can think about some more distinct unit type symbols.

Just take a look and discuss! :)

TBH an easier way to do this might be to code it in the description eg.:

FG Generic basic fighter. Best at engaging other fighters or TAC bombers.

FH Heavy duty fighter designed for low altitude use ie ground attack.

FI Interceptor fighter designed for higher altitude use engaging STRAT Bombers.

Whilst I am thinking about unit descriptions, why not include the US code names for the Jap aircraft too?

Yeah units could use some descriptions, but I was more thinking about easier visual identification. I have to look twice to make sure it's a Zero and not a Kango, Kanbaku or...
Well, I am also really not used to the names given to the "Val" and the "Kate" in OoBPac. I would like the US code names, probably known to more people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aichi_D3A
"The Aichi D3A, (Allied reporting name "Val")"
Ingame I think (kanjō bakugekiki, usually abbreviated to 艦爆 kanbaku on Wikipedia) its the Kanga...ko or so.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakajima_B5N
The Nakajima B5N (Japanese: 中島 B5N, Allied reporting name "Kate"
Ingame: yū-nana-shiki kanjō kōgeki-ki or kankō for short -> I think that is the "Kanjo"

Confuses the hell out of me.

Interesting. While beta-testing I asked for both things, a (I) or (FI) for intercepting fighter etc and also the US easier-to-recognize-names in addition to the official Japanese.
It would surely make it easier to use the air units in their proper roles without too much trial & error or reading up on every air type you are unfamiliar with.

What I really, really wish was if Japanese aircraft were identified by the Allied nicknames that were what I grew up learning from history books. So I know what a Val and a Kate is, even a Tony or a Nick, but the Japanese names just don't have the same flavor or immersion quality.

At least this additional unit info should be easy to mod, probably some changes in the unit.txt file until an update makes it obsolete :roll:

"X:\" Order of Battle Pacific\Order of Battle - Pacific_Data\Resources\Language\English.txt
or German.txt, Frenct.text

Contains the names.

unit_335 = B5N Kanko (K)
-> B5N Kate

unit_325 = D3A2 Kanbaku (B)
-> D3A2 Val

There are some more instances where the unit is named, so some more might have to be replaced.
