Can I turn off the animations and just have NATO style counters?
No NATO counters == wargame ...

Go to Options and choose either Tactical Map, this will give you the counter style play

That'll only give you boardgame style map I'm afraid. The NATO counters options are disabled for now because we didn't manage to complete all the animations and sound effects required to make it as polished as the 3D visuals.
It should be available in the first patch however. I just had another go with it in the developer build and it's mostly functional already.

It makes me feel pretty old and stodgy, but I just can't deal with all the extra info and motion from the animated counters.

No worries

NATO counters have been part of the game design since day one but completing 2 animation systems has been a bit more than we could chew. As you must understand the "fancy visuals" are generally more popular so they had priority. A lot of work already went into the NATO counters though so they should be available shortly!
I'll have a look if the game can be played properly with NATO counters as it is now. There will be glitches for sure, but if it works decently I can do a quick "hack" for you to unlock them.

I'm wondering what counters the Japanese did use back then on their maps...
