BHGS CHALLENGE AAR No 2 - THE NUMIDIANS FACE GAULS (Photos)

The Numidians favoured ambushed but were normally reluctant to fight hand to hand because of their small mounts and light armament. (D. Head)
Game 2 was against Keith Martin-Smith’s Gallic army. Keith is one of the top DBM players in the UK, although he’s new to FOG (welcome Keith!). Clearly it’s going to be another tough game.

My initial reaction on seeing Keith’s army deployed was that it was configured as a DBM army, with the (protected superior) cavalry and chariots maximised. This might not work that well in FOG where you need the impact foot doing their stuff, but it was an ideal army to fight me as it could cover the table and would be able to push me off.
Keith’s army was:
2 x 8 allied MF warband average IF, sword, prot
2 x 8 HF warband (as above)
1 x 6 HF Soldurii elite armoured warband (oh dear)
1 x 6 LF javelinmen
2 x 4 Lt Chariot superior
Lotsa x 4 cavalry superior spear, sword, prot
An IC CinC and 2 TCs
The game was so engrossing that I forgot to take photos until the end

And some of the game outcomes are also shown. Because there Gallic foot weren’t very numerous the FAKES and Spanish felt confident enough to take them on. I rushed my foot forward to engage Keith's infantry.
The light horse on my left were very roughly handled by a long line of cavalry. I found that whilst I could get the shooting hits (the Gauls were only 1 rank deep) superior status plus the influence of an IC meant that they usually passed. Fortunately for me, the elephants managed to stabilise the flank and counter-attacked.
The end result was a draw – with 5 BGs each routed. It was a great, fun game. To be honest, I should have lost more units, but gaps appeared in Keith’s cavalry line as he started to swing around onto my flank which the Moorish LH snuck through and escaped the encirclement.
