Pharnaces II took advantage of the Roman Civil War to invade Cappadocia and the surrounding areas to expand his kingdom. Domitius Calvinus took command of local Roman troops and those of the allied kingdom of Galatia and confronted Pharnaces II at Nicopolis. The Romans were defeated and suffered heavy losses.
The Galatian Legio was raised by King Deiotarus of Galatia and the Pontic Legio was raised from Roman colonists in Asia Minor.
