Elite units in Allied Corps - too many fighters!

Why are so many of the elite units in Allied Corps made up of fighter aircraft? I've been playing a campaign where I've managed to end up with a massive airforce of fighters, which are largely useless given that the Allies always have air superiority. In the entire campaign I have only received one elite ground unit, and that one early on in the North Africa campaign.

Is there anyway of exchanging it for a ground unit?

Not directly but you can always disband the SE unit and wait until you get a new one and hope it isn't an air unit again.

I've recently started my first Allied Corps campaign as the Americans at Torch. I fumbled my way through Salerno yesterday. Funny how the Krauts seem to have such a generous allotment of OS panzers - far better than I imagine I'd command if it was Panzer Corps.... The only way I was able to deal with them was with air power - B24's/25's. They racked up all kinds of stars, there was no enemy air cover & even the flak was almost nil...

Back to the point... At the start of Salerno, my first elite unit was a fighter (Spitfire Mark VB). I have moved on to Anzio & received a second elite unit - A British commando. I'm curious what I'll get next. I'm always glad to get anything, but I'd rather get a tank that can at least pretend to stand up to some of the stuff that will get thrown at me...

Truth be told, after my run-throughs with Allied Corp, I thought the only elite units were fighters! I read only later that you can get para and commando units. Still haven't gotten a non-fighter SE, although I wasn't as impressed with Allied Corps, so it will be a while until I try again.
