Ho Chi Mihn trail visible at end?

I recall reading in the manual (yeah weird I know, I read it! though the tutorial walk-through and displays are pretty solid) that the Ho Chi Mihn trail was supposed to be made visible at the end of the game (pg. 41) but I'm not seeing it.

Or is it less a 'trail' and more a series of drop points and that's what those little white icons represent? If that is the case, and you look at my VC contacts running in a very obvious line in the middle of the map, those don't correspond with the white icons at all really (which are all along the top of the map). I didn't have much incursion from the north in this game, it all came through that middle jungle. Hence putting my bases there.

Looks right to me, the VC spawn at the HCM trail point closest to their objective, so it is possible that some points never get used....

I have read a few threads now that mention building your base in the center of the map. This makes sense as the center is the closest point to all the extremes.

Just curious . . . I'm wondering if this is basically the "most efficient way to play", you build your base in the center, no exceptions. I don't own the game yet (still deciding if it's for me), so I don't have any knowledge either way. I'm just going off what I have bene reading. Are there maps where building in the center won't help you? I'm just hoping the game doesn't become "here's the standard setup" each and every game.

Thanks!

If you have a question unrelated to the thread you should start a new thread otherwise it gets confusing in here. The answer is no, creating your firebase in the middle of the map isn't always the best way, seldom in fact.

Terrain and village location determines afB placement, different every time

My apologies. I am aware of the etiquette, but thought it was sort of related. My bad. Thanks for the answers! That really helps!

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

But on the tutorial picture, it shows all the actual path, not a path that we guess.
It's not a problem, just a small chagrin as we were told we would show it all in the end.

The trail is actually 10 points spread across the map, and these points are displayed at the end of the 45 turns.

Okay.
So the tippling is only added in the tutorial, to explain here that those points make the trail...

Yes, the flags being the points

What does the Trail represent - in this game? Clearly it's not the main trunk line, with trucks and bridges, that ran through Laos. I assume it's one of the infiltration branches - small jungle trails, arms caches, maybe even smuggling using civilian infrastructure (ie, roads and rivers).

On that note, it would be great to have brown water navy units intercepting sampans, or similar attempts to halt smuggling. Maybe you pay a small price in H&M, and you get a good chance of stopping VC before they spawn.

PBR's and Sampans (also Marines and tunnels) are possibly the only iconic elements of the conflict not represented in V65, would dearly want to cover all in future, think Vietnam'66 Mekong Delta, Vietnam''67 The Iron Triangle, Vietnam'68 Ke Sahn.

Welcome to my world... :)

I think the trail is more like an underground tunnel system. I happened to park my firebase and a forward base right on top of them and VC kept pouring out of them the whole game.

That can happen, usually good for PP :D

Yep, once I got a handle on it - it was a cash cow of PP. Just felt like they were spawning right out of my two bases. :)

I don't think a tunnel system could really span the length of the province, could it? I guess I can think of the HCMT as a chain of arms caches. But maybe they should relocate (at a cost to the NLF player) if a base is built on or near them?

Tunnels would branch out from a HCMT point, probably towards a village giving added protection to the VC...
