Will this game in future let you play as the NVA/Vietcong. i know its early but curious if a future update would make this possible. thanks.
Love to see that as well. There are no games out there AFAIK that really model the other side of these types of conflicts. I would love to see a game that allows you to play as the insurgent/rebel leader.dmaloof wrote:Will this game in future let you play as the NVA/Vietcong. i know its early but curious if a future update would make this possible. thanks.
There are a few game out there, but none that have this particular mix of features as Nam 65.Seytan wrote:Love to see that as well. There are two tactical games about Vietnam that I know of "Squad Batles Vietnam" by HPS and "Steel Panthers:Main Battle Tank". They simulate small unit combat. Each has scenarios that depict individual firefights, the units are squad sized.
"The Operational Art of War" has many vietnam secanrios of different scales. However keep in mind taht TOAW is a lage, very complex and bottom-up designed game, with very specific orders of battle etc. In gneral the large scenarios are "monster games" that can take RL weeks to play through and can easily overwhelm even hardcore grognards. There are a few scenarios that feature company sized units which have some similarity to Nam 65 tho
Would really agree. Opart is a great game, but it is suited for classic conventional warfare. Squad battles and SP are tactical, small scale games that are meant to simulate individual clashes and separate scenariors. Thy do this well, but theya re not suited to simulate a long term conflict.Seytan wrote:Opart didn't capture the conflict well. I played the mod/scenarios for the vietnam game and opart just cant model it well. It dosnt work. SP MBT has scenarios, not a viable campaign for this type of conflict. I designed scenarios for SP and I believe it was for MBT regarding SCENARIOS in Vietnam, a number were hosted on the Wargamer website long ago :} The Lang Vie and the Mailed Fist scenarios are two I recall off the top of my head and the Lang Vie version was actually included in a release, As I was asked permission to use it by the SP peeps. My problem with SP and designing these is...you couldn't really model a extended conflict, its a one shot deal. Its a scenario. I tried to fiddle with the engine at the time to allow me to move units via extended way points to simulate a infiltration corrider that you had to detect and interdict to win, but it just didn't work. The engine...the tools to create something that resembled counter insurgency outside of the units wasn't possible.
Regarding squad battles I bought a copy and didn't like the way it was modeled either, I mean what we are really talking about here is apples and oranges, only Opart really offered something like a campaign via the Vietnam scenarios and even that wasn't unified, it was broken up. Nothing out there AFAIK models a genuine rebel/insurgent game that is turn based, tactical in application, with a strategic overview to control resources, political will, and grants you the choice of units you wish to employ according to whatever mechanic you choose to use to allow production of same. Only the old board games model this.
