with a few complaining about difficulty we see this in patch 1.04: v1.04 – February 26, 2014
Greatly increased AI performance

Performance in this instance means speed of operation, not that the AI has been made tougher.

The AI is now certainly 'smarter' and the speed of enemy moves and turns has been drastically improved.
