Hi. I´ve been reading something about sassanids, and I would like to know if savaran cavalry evolution from lancer (early stages) to a bow/swordman (later) will be reflected in the final list. I´ve checked beta list and noble cavalry is bow/swordman from the begining of the period. How is this evolution considered?

Roughly the list progression is:

Catafracts + lots of LH archers
Catafracts + Cv archers + less LH archers
Lot less catafracts + Cv archers
Cv archers only

As catafract equipment clearly remained the ideal throughout the Sasanid period any progression is, of course, conjecture, however, I think the above one is consistent with the evidence.

Yeah, that´s moreless what I meant. But in the beta list, you can never field many LH, and max. number of cataphracts is 6, much less than avaible for Parthians, e.g.

There have been a few changes to the lists sent out in the beta program, some for game balance and some because of further research ;)

Mainly further research. The only adjustment for game balance was to reduce the possible number of BGs of Spearmen graded as Mob (as opposed to HF).

The beta list (in the case of Sassanids) is very far from the final version, which follows the theorized development outlined by Nik.

However, an army that was legal under the beta list will still be legal under the final version (unless it had more than 2 BGs of Levy Mob).

Hi Nik

Have you checked out the research done by Doug Melville? It includes translations from Iranian, Arabic, and Central Asian sources. He discusses it at length here

One of his key points is that the cataphract remained in use to the end of the Sassanid realm. Mr Melville cites some interesting evidence

Yes, we have read Doug's work.

The list allows cataphracts up to 628 AD - by which time the Empire was exhausted following the war against Herakleos.

Does it mean that there are no more LH archers in the late period ???

The possibility of being drill will be expand in time or can some "elite" regiment can be upgraded.

I began to pay my painter for my sassanid army , i've made a later sassanid army using beta test army list so i need to know if some troops are no longer available !!!!!!
