charging into an existing melee.

Ok. So here is the situation.

My lance armed Macedonians have charged an average, armoured cavalry unit and are having a good old mosh. There is a longer frontage on the Macedonian side and these extra figs are fighting as overlappers. No probs so far.

The forst round of impact has been done, so both sides revert to using swords as opposed to lances.

Another unit of cavalry (with light spear) charge into the combat and attack the Macedonians on the overlap.

Question.

Do the macedonians fight in the impact phase with lances or as sword armed troops? :)

The Makedonians fight as lancers. Think of it as the extra squadrons of lancers who were assisting the bulk of the battle group against the first enemy reacting to the new threat.

You need to remember that a BG is not a single unit and to some extent the parts of it can act independently.
