I may have this wrong but - Battle Lines can only Advance and Comples Advance, or get the second move. But under Complex Advance, a Battle Line doesn't need to roll a CMT. Why then are there modifies under CMT for Battle Lines?

I assume you are referring the the fact that the bonuses for a general with a BG/BL.
While any move by a battle line is a simple move, a battle line that contains Battle Wagons, or light artiller, has to pass a CMT to move at all.

A good point,

You are right, as a battle line can only make moves from the advances section and the only complex move in there is a 'difficult' advance for undrilled troops then the fact that there must be a general with a battle line means that you will never have to test for such a move because the presence of the general means that the move is not complex in the first place.

It could well be that battle lines could in the earlier version of the beta perform some other complex moves (actually I know they could) and the reference to battle line has not been removed from that table.

I suspect though that if battle line was not mentioned in the CMT table there would have been a question on this forum asking why there was no bonus to a CMT for having a general with a battle line.

Having typed all of the above I think I have just realised somewhere that the battle line thing applies. If you have a battle line that includes shock troops then the general will count as with the battle line for the purposes of the not charging CMT  so there is a case where it does apply

Except shock troops test by BG not to charge - you cannot test the whole battleline. Page 59.

That's the one. IIRC the only one.

Thanks. That was only point of confusion. Love the rules. I'm using my ancients for the first time in about 4 years. Well done.
