Stakes and the edge of the world

I had a situation last night where a longbow BG was angled diagonally on its rear table edge.

When I deployed stakes, my rear edge went off table.

My opponent kindly allowed me to stay on the pitch as the stakes are representational markers only, but what would have been the ruling in a competition games? Or is the lesson - just don't do it.

I suspect Mea Culpae, and stay a bit further from the egde. There is no official ruling but a general principle is if there ain't room you can't do it.
