Basing Generals

I am wanting to rebase some generals for the game.
Ideally I would break up my DBM stands to free up standard figures for normal bases. I also fancy doing small dioramas or vignettes.
I think that square or circular bases are good for this - which have the added benefit of standing out from fighting bases.
Would this work?
Would it be a problem if they weren't the same width as standard bases?

I beleive there was a thread earlier on this very topic.
The book has general elements on a 40x40 base. Since the geenral is representational then you can put whatever you want on the base, but the base should be the same 40mm of the other base widths.

I have played against an army with generals on round bases and it wasn't an issue but it is not strictly by the rules.
To be honest if you do use round bases I can't see many people complaining and if you magnetise the bases then if someone gets picky just stick your generals on a 40 by 40 metal square for that game.

And if the diorame looks good, peoplw will complain even less.
At first I wasn't in favor of this but as I play more games i think making generals more different is a good thing.

I have based Medieval leaders on coins.
Three figures on a large coin for IC, two on a medium coin for FC and 1 on quaters for TC.
For late Romans I converted DBM command stands by turning figures to face the 30mm side.
Again three figures for IC, 2 for FC and 1 for TC.

Bear in mind that they will need to be able to fit in amongst standard troop bases when fighting in the front rank.

Not really. Our local club is using a variety of different conventions that make it clear. Some commanders with certain Bgs look downright odd.
I usually just put the general one base in so it is clear they are committed. Another player just puts a different color marker.
There are many options rather than the strict one in the rules.

I like using a marker for the general in the front line. It makes it easier to see who is fighting and to remove bases as needed. Pushing back the front rank stans for a 40 deep general looks a little odd and can get in the way where as a general can be moved or even removed if you have a marker showing where he is.

I have been putting the commander touching but behind the BG if not in combat. In front to side of BG if in combat unless room didn't allow. In that case, I would then replacing a stand. I find the depth of 40mm to be problematic when lines get close to each other. Like when the LF fall back through the HF. Or when rear support was moved very close to front BG (for some odd reason).

I argee with Monty that the actual placing of a 40 x40 or 60 x 60 based commander can sometimes be a nuisance. As he's only a marker, I sometimes end up with troop bases on top of his base. In a way, the smallest possible base for a commander would ease that albeit minor issue.
However, for measuring commander's influence, it's to a player's advantage to have that command base as large as the rules permit?

That is correct. It's a trade-off, and deciding whether the (small) increase in command radius is worth the (small) placement nuisance is definitely an individual call.

I based my generals on 40 X 40 square bases and they just looked naff. We also found that for game purposes we just put the general marker somewhere near the unit and state whether it is in the front rank for combat. We never bother to try and physically move it into a front rank.
As such I gave up and tried rebasing a general element on the 40mm round bases I Wanted to use in the first place. They look much better and everyone at the club thought they looked pretty cool. No one objected.
I have tried to put a picture here..

Incidentally, "Commanders are mounted on a single stand of maximum 40mm [60mm] square or on a smaller stand of a stuiable size for their troop type." (p125)
