charging into an angle

I had a BG of Pikemen which charged the front of some archers and the flank of some swordsmen. Those two enemy BG's were in roughly an "L" shape and I charged into the angle.
We were confused on how to conform. It seemed that if I tried to conform any of my bases, it would have resulted in bases overlapping each other. So we played it with the bullet point stating that if a conform is not possible, then don't conform.
Questions:
1. Was this the correct interpretation? (e.g. was it correct not to conform?)
2. Should we have had the enemy BG conform in the following turn?
3. If the enemy should conform, then should they be "moved" to be to the front of the Pikemen BG, or are there times when they would conform to the Pk's flank and thus force the Pk BG to fight in two directions.
Thanks so much!
