Here is what I plan to thorw out against the masses. For what it is worth yes, My Swiss were pretty scary.
1xIC
1xFC
1xTC
I Cohort 8xBG Legio: Armored, superior, drilled, impact, Skilled swordsman
II to IV Cohort 6xBG Legio: Armored, Superior, drilled, impact, skilled swordsman
1x6 BG of Creten Archers: unarmored, superior, drilled, bow
1x8 BG Slingers: unarmored, average, undrilled, sling
2x4 BG Light Horse: unarmored, undrilled, javalin, spear
1x4 BG Gallic cavalry: armored superior, armored, undrilled, spear
1x8 BG Gallic medium: infantry average, protected, undrilled, impact, swords (you can call them spanish if you want)
1x Fortified camp
Total 797
Am I low on skirmishers? how does this look to the brain trust?

I think an IC + a FC is complete overkill - you could probably get away with just 3 TCs.
I would have at least some legio in 4s - either split 2x6 into 8+4, or 3x4. A legio BG of 4 is relatively effective in uneven / rough terrain.
I am not convinced 1 BG of MF is a good idea, if there is no convenient terrain to hid them in they can be a liability, and they and not sufficiently better in terrain than the legio. If I was going to take MF it would be either Thracians [protected heavy weapon is quite cost effective] or Gladiators [ being superior they can support the legio]
I would look at replacing 1 BG of LH with Syrians [LH Bow] - javelin armed LH have to be carefull near cavalry and even medium foot.
When I have used the army I went for a TC as the C-in-C and 8 Cavalry + LH - specifically to give a BPI of +0 as this is an army that doesn't care much about terrain, but benefits from moving first.

I see your point. If I recaulate it ad lower my FC to a TC and drop the first 4 BG of legio to 6 and have 1 extra BG of 4 it would allow me do the same thing I wanted to do with my BG 0f 8. Mainly depoly it last and decide the if I was going to do a enflade left, right or a frontal attack. Now I can do the same with my 1 BG of 4. I like the Gladiator idea but I do not know how often they were deployed and I really don't like "gimiky" troops. Syrains would be nice but I have already bought and painted Numidians
I have to figure points and see how it comes out.

Perhaps this would be better in the Army Design sub-forum? There have been a number of posts about Late Republican in there.
I would say drop the FC definitely. Unless you really feel you want to have initiative then drop the IC as well & have 4 TC's. Romans often want to move first in my experience with Mid-Republican's anyway so not having initiative isn't a biggy. I think BG's of 6 for the legions is a good idea (or even 4's). After all being Superior, Armoured & Drilled is nice - add in some TC's with them they are going to be able to move twice in the first turn & then you can throw in the Generals at Impact/Melee making you Elite. Very tough.
Cheers,
Greg

Hit the nail on the head, you did. Topic moved in order to tidy things up.

FWIW, I wonder whether you have too much (or not enough) mounted. The Legio are your game winners. One BG of Cv and two BGs of Lh might turn out to be just enough to get into trouble, but not enough to accomplish anything. Maybe drop one BG of Lh in favor of more foot?
Will you be at Little Wars this coming weekend? I will be interested to see how the large BGs of legionaries do.

I have changed up my list slightly:
4x6 Cohorts
1x4 Cohort
1x4 Gallic Cavalry
2x4 Numidian Cavalry
1x8 Slingers
1x6 Creten archers
1x8 Medium Gallic Infantry (protected, impact, swordsman)
1x Fortified camp
2x Field commaders
1x Troop commander
Comes out to 801 points. I will be at littlewars Friday but I am on duty Saturday and my Romans are still not done being painted. I should be able to march them out end of April.

801 points is not normally permitted in an 800 point competition - it is 800 points or less.
I don't think you need 2 field commanders.
I would replace 2, or even all of the 6 cohorts as 4 + 8 - I believe 8s or 4s are more usefull here than 6s.
You don't specify the C-in-C - even if you have a FC it doesn't need to be the C-in-C, it depends on what you want your PBI to be.

Since the number of torneys I have played in in the last 25 years of wargaming is well, maybe 1 I am not fretting the point. I am thinking of a new versoin of this list and will post it as soon as I get the hamster back on the wheel.

Okay Hamster's back on the wheel and here is my final list
2xFC
1xTC
1x6 Cohort
6x4 Cohort
1x4 Gallic Cavalry
1x8 Gallic infantry (Med, Protected, impact swordsman)
2x4 Numidian Light Cavalry
1x8 Slingers
1x6 Creten archers
1x Fortified camp.
I am thinking the flexibilty of smaller Cohorts may be helpful in poor terrain. Plus the 1 big one allows me to decide where I want to attack by deploting it last.
I also like using more than one Field commander. My Swiss have 2 Field and 2 Troop and they run all over the place. I will not be that flexible with all my cavalry undrilled and almost all my lighter troops.
How does this look? For what it is worth it is now 799 points so if I went to a tourny no one would squack. And I am not that worried about points.
