I seem to understand everything about the different formations except for the following:

If I desire a specific formation, (ie. balanced, offensive, defensive, etc.), why would I ever choose the formation without the corresponding disciplined attribute? For example, if I wanted a squad to have a defensive formation, why would I choose the "defensive" formation over the "disciplined & defensive" formation? Is there any penalty for gaining the disciplined attribute? The manual doesn't state any, so I am confused - there seem to be frivolous options.

You probably wouldn't - they are just better versions so we shodul probably have replaced the old formations instead of adding new ones.
