Dismounting Knights

Many (though not all) of the lists in Storm of Arrows allow knights to always dismount with heavy weapon. However, the main rules say knights can dismount as offensive spear, swordsmen (as they retain all capabilities, but lancers become offensive spearmen) if the opponent deploys fortifications or battle wagons.

So, do the knights with the heavy weapon option get to choose whether they dismount with spear or heavy weapon if their opponents deployed fortifications?

Thanks
Cole

No. If they dismount at all, the list notes over-ride the default rule-book case.

Ordonnance French after 1466

Further question on this:

The ordonnance french are allowed to dismount as hf, heavy weapon before 1466, but not there after.

Now I'm fielding a army in 1480. What happens if I face battle wagons an decide to dismount?

Do I dismount
a) with heavy weapon as the list states for the ealier period
or
b) as offensive spears as the default for dismounted knights?

I think b should apply, but I'm not sure.

Well given what Richard has said it won't be (a), if they are allowed to dismount in a game with a 1480 army it will be the rule book default (b).

The reason the list item is there is that they can ALWAYS dismount in the early period, and then as HW. No need for any WWgs etc.

Thanks for answer.

I played the tournament in Ulm this weekend, fielding my ordonnance french. But noone fielded battle wagons, so i could not dismount anyway.

Not that you needed to either, even without dismounting you won handily after all.
I think however the rule default of Offensive Spear is pretty dubious for later Knights, although it does have the advantage of keeping them in the Shock troop bracket.

As RBS said the book lists over-ride the generic dismounting rule I would say that unless the French list includes dismounting options for after 1466 I would say they can't dismount.

So you are saying that I'm only allowed to apply the "dismount if the opponent deploys Field Fortification or War Wagons" rule as long as my army list says nothing about dismounting at all? Yet are forbidden from applying the stated rules if I could dismount, just not in the particular period? Sorry but that sounds like a rather unlikely interpretation to me.

Unless facing BWg etc when they dismount as stated in the main rules. Which I think is what RBS actually said
