I'm interested to hear what your army compositions are at the end of the game. Tell me squad type, level & equipment. Also, what difficulty level you played the majority of the game in. Did you find it too easy, too hard or just right? Thanks!

Hi everybody

I have finished the campaigns (romans & gauls) on normal and I found it "easy". I've only encountered problems in those time-limited battles, they're the only ones I've replayed. I once didn't know why I lose the scenario (radar map full of blues and no red) until I discover that little general hidden in a corner  . I'm founding "hard" level rewarding, but I got more trouble with the last demo scenario on normal...maybe because I was a newbie...

I also found the Gaul campaign easier than the roman (considering you have to play roman before, I would expect just the opposite). The hardest campaign is Civil War...

ROMAN:

1 General (16)
2 archers (20, 16)
1 hastatii (24)
1 principes (32)
1 legionaires (24)
4 pretorians (22, 21, 13, 11)
3 heavy cavalry (22, 24, 10)
4 auxilia (28, 24, 17, 6)
1 militia (31)
1 Dumbo (13)

and GAUL:

1 general (9)
1 skirmisher (14)
5 light infantry (15, 15, 14, 12 and 9)
4 veterans (19, 18, 15, 15)
3 naked fanatics (14, 13, 11)
2 archers (10)
2 nobles (14, 14)
1 militia (18 level)
1 scout (17)
1 javelin men (10)

bye.

Playing Roman on Normal I would have to say Normal felt like Easy except for some of the later time limited battles of less than 2 minutes duration with only 10 or 12 units - these were quite tough and needed a few replays to get the tactics just right. Going to play Celts on Hard next. All of the heavy infantry units were on grade 3 or 4 weapons and armour. Everything else on grade 2

Total Exp points = 115960

Legate (16)
Militia I (40)
Militia II (39)
Scouts (22)
Auxilia I (21)
Auxilia II (23)
Velites I (22)
Velites II (23)
Praetorian I (23)
Praetorian II (22)
Praetorian III (23)
Praetorian IV (21)
Triarii I (23)
Triarii II (19)
Triarii III (17)
Triarii IV (18 )
Triarii V (15)
Auxiliary Cavalry I (14)
Auxiliary Cavalry II (13)

Game started at lowest level, then went to HARD setting when it was too easy. The HARD setting was just right and made the game fun and challenging.

ROMAN:
Equipment was upgraded to level 3 at the most.
1 General (22)
2 archers (27, 13)
1 hastatii (27)
1 skirmisher (37)
4 legionaires (23,17,16,1)
1 pretorians (14)
1 heavy cavalry (22)
2 auxilia inf (36, 33)
1 Scout (30)
1 elephant (5)
1 spearman (23)

GAUL: on HARD setting all the way.
Equipment was upgraded to the most level 2. General, Calvary and Veteran units had at least level 3 equipment
1 general (17)
1 skirmisher (19)
4 warriors (17, 15, 13, 10)
3 veterans (21, 18, 10)
2 naked fanatics (13, 2)
3 archers (17, 14, 1)
1 nobles (16)
1 scout (17)

Just finished Celts on Hard and I have to say that it felt very easy indeed. I ran through the whole campaign in an afternoon  Surely this should feel much harder ? I didn't do anything vastly different to my Roman campaign on Normal and just built an evolving army with armour/weapon upgrades applied after the army was complete. All veteran, noble and fanatic units had grade 2-4 improvements.

Final Exp points: 172500

General (12)
Skirmishers I (15)
Scouts I (16)
Militia I (18 )
Militia II (15)
Militia III (16)
Militia IV (17)
Veterans I (17)
Veterans II (16)
Veterans III (17)
Veterans IV (15)
Veterans V (15)
Veterans VI (14)
Fanatics I (14)
Fanatics II (9)
Nobles I (15)
Nobles II (14)
Nobles III (15)

OK, Roman army finished on Hardest level (a tough challenge)

Legate (16)
2x Milita (both 16)
skirmishers (26)
Scouts (15,17)
Archers (34, 34, 33, 27) - archers are not as powerful in the harder level games, so I needed 4 units
Hastati (20)
2x Praetorians (20, 18 )
2x Auxilia (20, 23)
Auxilary Cavalry (22)
Elephant (11)

A million exp points  Does V.Hard churn out vastly more exp. points per scenario then ?? Its almost impossible to get above 200,000 on Normal or Hard. I'm playing on V.Hard Celts at the moment and i'm not seeing vastly inflated exp. points early on in the campaign.

Yes, the difficulty level effects the fame earned. Its about twice as much on very hard compared to normal.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I will be needing all that extra fame to heal my badly mauled units  Very Hard is truly VERY  hard

I think what would be interesting is to fight on line with the army you completed with at the end of the single player game. 8)
Imagine 2 Roman armies hitting each other with everything they have controlled by a real person.
Everything may hinge on your Legate's training and command control.
Anyway, I'm sure someone has already thought of that.
Cheers.

I usually had the Praetorian's in front, with the Auxiliary Archers just behind. I only used the Malitia, Skirmishers and Scouts if I kept losing a battle (after buying most of the others, obviously I used them before.) The only times I had trouble were on the very short time limit maps. Often the Auxiliary Archers would take out the advancing infantry before they were near enough to the Praetorian's for them to start fighting.

Hastati - 24, 23, 23, 20, 15

Celts on Very Hard level

Gold 940
Fame 471060

General (16)
Skirmishers (18 )
2x Scouts (15,14)
4x Warriors (17, 15, 3, 4)
2x Veterans (20,17)
2x Fanatics (11,10)
2x Nobles (17, 17)
4x Archers (17, 15, 14, 14)
2x Javelinmen (14, 4)

The very early games were very hard to complete but once I could afford some Warriors I found every other battle fairly easy. It was the Scouts that won the early campaign for me though.

Indeed,

Scouts seem quite good. Look up a bit at my final army, my scout unit received the most promotions of all my troops. I found that a bit surprising, however, I also discovered in my last campaign how to use them to their best effect. The tactic I used was to... well... that would be telling wouldn't it?

It seems people are not using Dumbos in single too much...and those of us who used them didn't manage to get them into lots of exp-point'd killing machines (like Jimi Hendrix said "Are You Really Experienced?)". I recruited one, but the unit didn't seem to work like principes or whatever, poor stats. However, people from multiplayer are telling wonders about them....
