Ok. So Im new to this game. I have read the rules on terrain and cant get my head fully around how this works in its selection. As i understand this, going to a competition with an 800 point army with terrain means i have to take a blummin great box of spares for the opponents choices also? Am i reading too much into this?

If your opponent wants to place a piece he can provide it. You are not obliged to supply terrain pieces for him.

I think perhaps he was asking whether he needed terrain for all territories as he may end up playing in tropical say.
In my experience comps are very fiendly places so people will bring along theor terrain and have problem lending you relevant bits and pieces that you may not have. So I wouldn't worry too much.
I take along a filing box full of various bits and often lend or borrow with my opponent even then

May one lend a suggestion
I also looked at the terrain rules when I started and thought Shucks I am going to need 28 different types of terrain??? (I made up the number 28)
What I have started doing is making some fairly generic "rough terrain" pieces that I can then add village buildings, lichen, trees, etc to which means I can have a construction kit of terrain that is not too large but can make quite a varied collection of terrain items.
Of course ALL the armies my friends have are agricultural / hilly / developed. If you encounter some kind of desert / jungle / arctic army it may be a bit tougher to use the generic pieces....
