Odd situation and a couple of questions

OK, as promissed here is the odd situation from last nights game:

Image

The square bases of knights are really elephants (Colin and Mike both brought Numidian armies, neither of them brought any elephants.... )

The elephants top centre have charged the LH (now facing up in column on the right. Because of a minimum evade roll and having to contract down to a single element column to avoid the routing LH combined with a maximum VMD for the elephants the elephants have the move to catch the evaders.

I assume that the elephants as they will hit the routers first will still step forwards into the rear of the LH column.

The LH survived the impact and we get on to the melee. I assume that the elephant in contact with the routers cannot fight as an overlap. Interestingly the LH almost beat the elephants in melee (well they did till I remembered they lose 1 dice in 2 :( ).

Come the JAP the routers have to move again. They routed the previous JAP because they couldn't break off so dropped from fragmented to broken and are very near the action despite being routers.

The routers cannot avoid friends because the left hand two bases have to shift more than a base width to get through the gap. As such the routers will break through the spear AND the column of LH fighting the elephants???

All in all a reall mess which I think I played out correctly.

They have to rout directly away from the elephants, so I think it would be harsh to make them rout through the LH. (Though you could argue that they will as they must wheel on to the new rout direction.)

This does bring up an interesting question.... If you have to burst through friends when routing/evading, can you use your 1 base side-step to avoid one of them, so that both don't become disrupted?
(which you would do, if allowed, in this situation)

-I don't have the rules with me-

Good point, I missed that one.

My reading of the rule is that if you can't completely avoid trouble by sliding or contracting then you don't do any contracting or sliding.

That is my impression as well.

Now I have the rules handy I'd have to agree. If you can't move all front rank bases their full move, they burst through everyone in the way.
