Feeding more troops into an existing melee

Why is the word "existing" melee used in the heading? To me this implies that it can only be done after at least one round of melee is fought. But the rules themselves don't seem to say this. How are people playing this?

We play it that until you are in melee you cannot feed more bases in. Which means that we have to adjudicate at least one round. After that either side may feed additional bases in.

Wouldn't all melees count as an "Existing Melee", after all to get into melee you first have to have an impact phase which starts the melee, then later in turn during melee phase, you start to feed more troops in?
At least thats how I understand the rule "shrug"

I would say that the impact phase starts the close combat, not the melee

i think you can feed in during the manoeuvre phase immediately following the impact phase.
pg 72 does say, "a battle group that is already in contact with enemy can expand its frontage by one file", and the opponent gets to match it.
it seems that an impact creates a melee.

Thats what I was meaning Oldentired, at the end of the Impact phase, the melee exists, so following the turn sequence, you get to start feeding in more troops.....

But why then say "existing" in the heading, if all melees are existing?

You can feed extra troops into the melee in the manouevre phase after the original impact.

To make it clear that it can't be used to start a new melee?

Does this mean that both sides can feed in reinforcement or only the side who's turn it is currently?
For example if a base is lost in impact froim the group you charge, do hey get to move someone or is the space still open for one round of melee.

Replacing lost bases is a differen thing to feeding more bases in anc happens in addition to feeding in bases.
In your opponents bound you can only match an existing overlap or meet an expansion.
In your bound you can create a new overlap or match an existing one.
