Books on Byzantium?

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good book on Byzantium for me that would help in my selection and then composition of an FOG army? I'd don't have any armies in this period, but would like to, and don't really know too much about it. I'd want the book to discuss both the military and political aspects of the times. I'm a history buff but no expert so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

Warfare, State, and Society in the Byzantine World 565-1204, by John Haldon.

There are a couple of Ospreys that are good introductions also.

While very interesting, this book will not help you much in drawing up an army list.

For the armines of the later C10th to later C11th I would suggest "Sowing the Dragon's Teeth" by Eric McGeer and for the army of the late C6th to roughly mid C7th you need look no further than the Strategikon.

Whoops, I'd forgotten Sowing the Dragon's Teeth - it wasn't readily visible on my bookshelf. I'll second Nik's recommendation - it is an excellent book.

Also it looks as if it has just been republished. Off to get a copy ...
