The Soviets were completely taken by surprise by Operation Typhoon - which does much to explain their loss of over 700,000 men in the first 3 weeks. They failed to spot the redeployment of 4th Panzer Army and misjudged how quickly Guderian could about face and race north after the Kiev calamity. The Wehrmacht began an offensive with the highest proportion of mechanized forces it would ever enjoy. (No wonder that Hitler prick was so confident.)

What if Stavka was on the ball and they saw Typhoon coming?
