Need Help Understanding Victory Conditions

I played my first campaign game and lost on day 23. I had 23 victory points. The rules say the game can end early depending on the victory points for each side. It gives an example but I don't follow the explanation. I also looked at the victory points threshold table but am still confused on how victory points are scored and how they determine the outcome. Any help with this is much appreciated. I think it is important to understand the scoring method to fully enjoy the game.

The idea behind ending early is to avoid making you play out a game that has a foregone conclusion. In other words, if the Axis gets 55 VP, there is no likely way to drive the total back down to 24, so the game is declared over.
As Axis, you need 25 VP to win. The Victory Points briefing gives you detail about your progress.
When checking the rules, most of the time you actually want to look at the Full Rules, rather than the summary. (They are longer to read, but more detailed, if something is not clear.)
