2 Questions On Basing For Commanders

The army lists always specify a stand type for commanders, often either cavalry or the predominant troop type of the army. The rules say 40mm by 40mm bases.
Why is this? Apart from compatibility with earlier rulesets, it seemed quite confusing when I played a game at the weekend. Which stand was cavalry, and which the general?
Is there anything wrong with basing commanders as single figures, perhaps on something like a 40mm diameter circular base?

A 40mm circle while identifiable is not a good idea. Generals need to be able to join a BG and a circular base does not make this very easy.
Most people are moving towards 40 by 40 bases with varying numbers and types of figures to represent different types of generals so an IC will have the man himself, a standard bearer, an aide and perhaps a couple of foot figures too. A TC may just be a commander and a standard bearer.

I think I have it easy for my Burgundians. My flags are actual people's. It will be obvious who is Charles the Bold, or Antoine, the Grand Batard, or the Count of Romont.

Must admit I find that 40x40 bases stand out nicely, however, having played against an army with generals on round bases I can say there were no problems with that either.
Flags, etc. and a mixture of figures on the 40x40 base help as well.

I am basing my commanders on 40x30 bases but like the idea of round bases. It just feels more commandy ( I know thats not a word : ) ). As long as you can fit the commander in melee it should work. Personally I just found 40x40 way too big and it looked goofy to me.

40 x 40 just makes it very clear what youa re doing
But any base can do the job between trusting adults
We also specified to avoid the 120 sq base that adds a lot to commant ranges .... somebody out there would try it!!
