The Italian Condotta rivals my affections for the Wallachians, and I've been looking at the list and have a couple of questions with regards to allies:

- The choice of allies doesn't come with an ally commander choice. Does this mean that the minimum sized BGs from the city-specific lists can be commanded by any commander?
- Can you choose the same ally twice, and get two minimum sized groups (assuming that wouldn't violate the maximum?

You have to make allied contingents from within the list so if you have say a Papal army with a Florentine ally you could have a BG of longbow in the main army and another BG of longbow as part of the ally. If the ally also includes 4 bases of men at arms you would only need another 6 in the rest of the army and the maximim you could have in the rest of the army would be 32.

Ally generals can only affect troops in their contingent and troops in an allied contingent can only be affected by their own general. The minimum sized special BGs would have to be commanded by their own allied general, at least that is the way I understand it.

I can't see anything restricting you to one ally from one location but if you did you would not get two lots of special options and people would look at you as though you were trying to be 'clever'

But there are no ally generals on the list, which begs the question of how the allied contingents are commanded...

If I read the rest of the lists correctly, the mention of Italian allies under 'allies' in the Italian Condotta list means that you 'start over' with the Italian condotta list to get your allies. That is: take a commander, the required core troops and off you go. There are several lists like Medieval German that list allies where you must refer back to the referenced army list, in that case, Swiss. The Ordonnance Burgundian list refers to Yorkist English Allies-and only says "Wars of the Roses English" so you can't do anything else but go to that list to get your allied troops.

This is different from say, the way the later Swedish list does, for example. Or the Swiss for that matter.

I don't why they did that way, but it probably has to do with limiting some choices for some armies and not so much with others.

Condotta was a conglomeration of states at times. Hecnethe different approach to such an ally nation as against a nation with an external ally.

See the notes for the list at the beginning for how to do it - seems fairly clear.

Any time you have a ally mentioned you can have an allied general. It say you take troops from the main list replacing those in the mian army so you can replace generals with allied versions thereof for the contingents and they only command their own. Spo yu can have 2 allied FCs if you want to. Save 10 pts but restrict the C&C.
It gives you 1 more or better BG if you do a 2 ally version. If you don't lose any generals you are better of; if you do you are worse of as they can't cover for each other.

The lists unusual structure is rather confusing really

You can take up to two of your generals from the main list as allies and they will thus cost 10 points less but will be limited to commanding their own contingent.

This might be worth a comment for the FAQ I suspect.

Condotta is probably the most complex list we've done - although the 'Abbasid is a bit complicated in a different way (but you'll have to wait until Rise and Fall is released to see that). It's no DBM Medieval German list though

If this is the biggest problem with it I'm fairly happy.
