Qualifier to armor breakthrough?

The rules section reads "Attacking armor may move an extra space if all defenders are destroyed."
I've had several instances now where attacking armor has eliminated defenders, but did not get an extra movement space. Cost me a game once as I was counting on the subsequent armor breakthrough to go back a space and defend my supply.
Are there caveats to armor breakthrough, or was this just a bug?

in truth, its impossible to say with out the save game. Next time it happens file a bug, as explained on the support page. Make sure you at least write a description so we know what you're trying to show us. We'll then get a save game and be able to reproduce and analyse it.

There's no breakthrough on the first day at all because the roads were jammed. If even one enemy unit retreats, then you don't get a breakthrough. And you can only breakthough along roads. (I hope someone can back me up on that . .Nick?)

Actually the restriction is you cannot Breakthrough into a Forest area unless its along a road. You can Breakthrough into other types of areas normally.
The only other restrictions that may have influenced why the OP may not have been allowed to Breakthrough is that all defenders must be eliminated. If any defending unit retreated then it prevents the Breakthrough even if the rest were destroyed.
As a side note Mechanised Infantry units do not qualify for Breakthrough, only Armour.

Aha, there *are* qualifiers!
Might be helpful if some of these were placed in the rules? (Unless they already are and I need remediation in reading.)

They are actually but you're probably only looking at the Rules Summary which only provides 'one liners' of each rule concept.
If you click on the Full Rules then you'll see a detailed version with the Breakthrough qualifiers.
