We are working on Achievements for the next major update.
At present we are contemplating the obvious: victory for each side in each scenario. What else would be good?

How about a few tiers of X number of victories over other players (probably by each side)? For example, achievements for winning 10 and 50 online games as each side (4 achievements total - or 8 if you want to break it down by scenario). This gives everyone some incentive to keep playing online games.

Grades of victories over each AI opponent based on VPs
Grades of victories over online opponents based on VPs
Number of online victories (1,5,10,50)
Number of AI victories (1,5,10,50)
Achievements for incredible things like retaking or holding St Vith as the Allies etc
"So close": losing a game by 1 VP
"By a whisker": winning a game by 1 VP
"Master of the machine": beating all four AI players in both scenarios

Perhaps some easy ones to give players a nice warm feeling when first starting out:
1) Achieve a Breakthrough
2) Capture a Town / City
3) Cut off an enemy unit
4) Relieve a cut off friendly unit
5) Cross the Meuse

This game is so good in multiplayer that I wish it had a ranking system (akin to the one used in chess). It would be great to be able to compete in BotB tournaments.

I agree that ELO based rankings and matchmaking would be awesome but I imagine that's probably some way down the line.
Theres some other multiplayer features that I'd like to see introduced before that like chat and timers but that's probably for another thread.

Those are good. I'm a fan of some quirkier achivements too.
I vote for "The little pazner that could" => Drive the 150th off the map

The only ones I came up with were horrible puns.
"Nuts!" - Hold Bastogne for the entire game as the Allies
"Nuts to You!" - Take Bastogne as the Axis
Pay the Peiper - Take 1st SS Panzer off the map

"Save the 106th"
As the allies, the 106th infantry must survive the whole game.

I like it.

I'm thinking about some of the features of the old PC game Panzer General, specifically relating to unit ratings and experience. Thus, rather than noting achievements of the player, I'm talking about the achievements of his units and his army. There is a new entry in the PC wargame genre, Unity of Command, that is travelling along this road as well. Now, I realize rewarding units -- battle stars, experience bennies, etc -- may be more appropriate in a campaign game setting, but nonetheless here we go: why not let the play of the game determine "elite status" for units, depending on how they perform during a game. One can think of any number of events that could generate a reward, from a sout defense to a killing attack, details pending. Stated another way, we enter BotB with a certain amount of confidence in, e.g. the 101st Screaming Eagles, because we see that elite patch proudly displayed on the unit graphic. It is rated elite in part because of its historical stout defense of Bastogne. Hmmm, that may or may not be an event in the game we are currently playing (in fact, over the games I have played, the 101st seldom posts to Bastogne). Come on 101st, let's earn it! Anyway, unit ratings in general usually presume success prospectively rather than retroactively within the context of the game. Why not consider changing that? Unit laurels, earned as the game progresses, provide the gift that keeps on giving as the game resolves, as the unit is more effective. Whether there is any carryover across multiple playings of the game is another matter.

Another path may be found in the great classic, Panzergruppe Guderian, wherein many units -- Russian -- are assigned combat ratings in a random manner from a stock of "untried" units bearing a "?" on the front side. Perhaps I should be thinking out loud on a different thread, since I'm off track.

(I request that the achievements are Multiplayer only. The AI is good to test the mechanics of the game, but too easy.)
"Merry Christmas"=Victory Before December 26th: Allies.
""Froehliche Weihnachten"=Victory Before December 26th: Axis
"Silent Night/Stille Nacht"=Neither side battles on December 25th, only movement or maintaining contact.
"Turn the Table", or "Race to the Rhine", or some other phrase to exemplify poorly covered flanks: Capture every location along the Axis edge of the map.
"Dice Hate Me": Never win a battle, but somehow manage Victory (Is this even possible? Maybe with constant retreats, holding flanks, blocking tactics, you might do it in "Race", but probably not in "Battle".)
I'm sure I can come up with few more.

1940 Redux: capture the Sedan space with a German panzer unit.

German "Even Smaller Solution" Victory/ "The Generals Disobey the Fuehrer" : Germans win with an at least 20 ( or whatever) VP margin of victory and hold St. Vith, Spa, Verviers and Bastogne but never moved a unit adjacent to the Meuse ("Even Smaller" because historical Small Solution calls for capture of Leige, and is too close to typical/"average" German victory aims in game)
German "Grand Slam" Victory / "The Little Corporal Proves The Generals Wrong" : Germans win and send at least 20 ( or whatever ) pips of strength off the map to the NW ( I have seen someone say they won by over 100VPs and sent several panzer divisions off-map on Twitter)

I definitely like the Grand Slam victory, winning with 100 VP but there should also be a Small Slam: Winning the game as the Axis with FEWER than 20 VP. (It's doable, one has to "not" eliminate all the units you can.)
I personally would like to see more achievements around human vs human matches. Examples: Playing x number of people, Beating y number of different Allied players, exiting the most points off the map
Some other miscellaneous thoughts:
- Name the achievements after medals both sides used and, if possible, make the icon match. Given all the 'bar additions', e.g., "With Oak Leaves", you could easily create a tremendous variety of these.
- Get the leader boards up!
- Have achievements categorized into 'participation' types as well as 'accomplishment' and competitive types.
