Though I started a race with the advantage of avoiding the first crashing attack against me, I was crashed into at the first turn and took wheel damage. Later in the race, I was crash attacked and a red X appeared which I assumed meant the attempt would cause no damage, which it didn't. But the very first crash attack against me at the first turn certainly did cause wheel damage.

That is weird, are you sure the first Wheel damage was taken because a crash and not because over speeding at the turn?
