If we want to let the multiplayer part to take off, something like a skirmish mode is more than welcome. Also the singleplayer crowd would appreciate that.
Skirmish mode means: basically you play on maps where each player can choose freely a faction, mirror games are entirely possible. Both player start with the same amount of requisition points and the map layout is usually balanced.

That really would open up the game to tournament and ladder play.
