Aerial units

Have you used aerial units successfully in Armageddon? Mine always seem to be shot down quite easily. They do a good amount of damage, but the dodge they supposedly have never seems to occur(yes this includes checking if an aerial unit is being hit by something that ignores the dodge). Thoughts?

I agree. Currently air units are quite underpowered. Unfortunately the dodge bonus is currently not moddable. You could give them higher defense or the like.

I use aerials as a long- range support (Vulture gunships, for example) and they work, inflicting quite a punch from safe distance. The key is to position them correctly- combine maximum possible range with rivers and other terrain obstructions, so it doesn't get shot down or mauled.

I gave up on aerial units after my Stormraven unit got shot down by a bunch of traitor Ratling snipers. Are those snipers graduates from the Vindicare Temple ?

I dont think aerial units are worth their cost with the unreliable Flyer trait. I rather buy Tank Destroyers/Basilisks for Range 4 fire support.

The only good use for aerial units is supporting your units push across bridges because they can travel on Water hexes. If future game updates change aerial units are only targetable by anti-air units (Hydra / Flakk Gun) , they might finally be worth using.

This, many times. Chance to dodge just isn't enough to make them useable: given thier weak armor and low HP, they need total immunity to not-AA weaponry to stop being expensive one-shot glass cannons and start being useable.

They are utterly useless. They move slowly and have lousy defense. For their points they must be among the worst (and most misrepresented) units in the game.

As an experiment I gave my Vulture +20 Defense, 12 speed and range 4 hellstrike missiles. That made it into a unit that fills a niche; excellent tank hunter, yet still gets shot out of the sky if you're not careful. A bit too good for the price tag maybe, but fun to play around with.

Aerial units don't have enough armour. 1 off the gunships which is actually classed as a super heavy only has 50 armour for blood angels and ultramarines and 60 armour for salamanders (Bug). it should have something like 90 - 100 armour rating as even the heavy gunship which is to survive multiple re-entries into the atmosphere can be shot down by 1 group of gretchin or conscripts the cheapest infantry. maybe need to reduce units to 2 and increase armour. also cant remember which gunship but the picture doesn't match the weapon layout

There is reason to think the aerial properties aren't fleshed out yet in the current version 1.03. If you check the detailed properties of e.g. a Vulture versus a Dropship you will notice that the former has "hover" and the latter "flying" as movement type. The Dropship is immobile though and can't be requisitioned, which leads me to think "flying" is an unfinished concept.

completely agree with you guys. air units right now is the definition of " air farce ". they pretty much fail in all aspects, aside from river/bridge assault, there is absolutely no reason to take them. hopefully the dev will fix them soon.

Similar issues.

Warhammer is not a game about air-power, because as we all know, in the far flung-future a chain-sword is a better way to go.

That said, if the air units had more movement and a wide field of vision, I'd think they'd have a greater role without becoming too useful. I do like how they can park atop impassible terrain and such and hope they can fly over mountains or any terrain for that matter.

No. They still suck bigtime.

What newest edition? 1.3? They are still useless in 1.3.

As some of the aerial units are super heavy transports it would be nice if they could pick up units and transport them. be nice to drop of a unit of close assault terminators in the back lines

Aye. Because they are still essentially slow-moving, low-armour ground-pounders.

Any unit can be converted into a transport by changing a single value (and adding a trait if you want it to carry terminators).

The problem is that transporters don't pick up anyone. They are assigned to one unit and one unit only, plus you can never have both the transporter and the transported unit fight at the same time.
Your assault terminators would come at a steep price and be pretty alone out there.

Аnd this is a terrible concept, taken from PanzerCo.
Developers, please rework transport concept in addons! Chimeras and LRaiders not armored bus!

For transports not 'fighting' with the unit, an easy fix would be to just have the unit's statistics slightly modified if they have a transport, or in the case of a Land Raider, greatly modified. It would then justify the points and might be easier to do than making a dedicated transport unit.

Yep, it will be very nice!
