In a follow up to this question about Vichy France, historically Germany took full control of the area late in 1942, why is it the Allied player needs to declare a separate DOW on it?

Historically Germany took full control of the mainland France part of Vichy because the Allies had DoWed Vichy and actually invaded the North African part.

Indeed. The French fought quite fiercely. In a naval battle the Americans sank a cruiser, six destroyers and some subs. A disabled French battleship fired from dry dock. Allied losses were severe in some local areas. From memory the French suffered about 4,000 casualties before realising that it was hopeless.

It was the Jean Bart - moored in Casablanca - going toe to toe with the American Navy - especially the U.S.S. Massachusetts. Think the ship managed to hold its "ground" and required the American Air Force to finish the job. There is a really good account of this in a book called "An Army at Dawn."
But I was more referring to the French resistance vs the Germans rather than what they did against the Americans and British in Operation Torch.
