Looking for a bit of help explaining this

Thought I had just sprung a neat trap.
A parliamentary infantry unit screened the highlighted cavalry - it (the infantry) was advanced obliquely to the right opening to threaten the flank of the royalist foot and open the gap for the cavalry unit to - I thought - flank the Royalist horse directly in its front.
This is immediately after the infantry was moved.
The flank of the Royalist horse is the only unit that the parliamentary cavalry could reach but it is not the priority target and the charge is not allowed.

I am sure there is a reason but having resorted to the manual I cannot work out why?
Any answers please  .

I am pretty sure you cannot charge the cavalry in the flank as the enemy infantry unit to the right of it is facing into that grid, IE you are entering that infantry units ZOC... You should be able to attack the infantry unit though ;)

The last square in the charge path is in the ZOC of the Royalist foot. You would be able to charge into the cavalry despite this if they were a priority target - facing within 45 degrees towards you - but not to charge them in the flank.

Effectively the Royalist foot battalion is protecting that flank.

The reason you cannot charge the infantry is that you would need 18AP to do so, because a charge move has to have enough AP to enter the enemy square, and the last step is diagonal so costs 6AP.

Thank you both - that makes sense now.
