Please give us better explanation of predicted combat result

I am quite often seeing predicted results that don't even come close to what actually happens in the combat. I know these numbers are just predictions, and there are still die rolls to do, but I am quite often seeing stuff like -6/-4, and neither side does any damage, or one Sentinel of mine having horrible odds vs. an enemy, and another sentinel of mine having better or much different odds against the same enemy.
More detail about these predictions are needed, pretty please. Are they working as designed, or is there still some tweaking and balancing to be done? Just curious.

Range has an affect on your ability to damage units, with the idea that being further away makes it harder to hit.

Yeah it's a bit hard at the beginning. You need to take account of unit number and unit hit points. It's easy to forget about unit HPs.
For example a tank platoon may have 5 units and each has 3 HP, while an infantry squad has 20 men each with 1 HP. If you see a number like -2/-8 the tank platoon may afterwards still have 5 units because an individual tank has 3HP. While the Infantry squad lost 8 men.
Also give attention to the weapon ROF and potential terrain bonus. The weapon efficiency reduction coming from terrain cover and LOS penalty can be quite significant. One thing for sure, the combat plays different to Panzer corps which is very refreshing.
BTW if you go to the unit purchase screen and click on the various units and weapon statistics, it will pop-up a window with a explanation what it does and how it works.

Thanks for your response Dragoon. I was also wondering about the combat prediction, but didn't consider HP's.
A lot of new things to learn...

I forgot about HP at the beginning too. I was till stuck in my thinking in PzC where individual unit didn't had HP.
One BIG tip. You can regain HP lost HP via rest and refit. Seems only 1 HP per turn though. Still nice since it doesn't cost you anything except time. This allows us to use heavy armored units as bullets sponges. I'm still trying to figure out the impact of morale.

Thank you. More things are being explained by fans of the game, and not the developers!
So, the combat prediction numbers are in hit points, and not units lost like Panzer Corps?
So, how do I read this . . . my Lehman Russ has 5 strength, and 3/3 hit points. What does this mean?
Another unit, a Steel Legion Support unit has 5/10 strength, and 1/2 hit points. What does this mean?
A better manual would clear all this up. Yes, I am on a crusade here on these forums. Poor manuals and a lack of game mechanic explanations drive me crazy!

In between missions it seems that all your units who survived are back to their full health. I'm used to Panzer Corps where you have to pay for reinforcements in the following scenario setup. But in this one it automatically replenishes them and for free, right?
One small bugbear i have is that during the scenario, it doesnt tell you how much it will cost you to repair your units. It would be nice if it told you when you hover your mouth over the repair button.
@ Fro - i think the reason the manual is so simple is that they were updating and changing the game almost right to the release date. So i'm guessing the best place to find out things is the threads here. From my experience with Panzer Corps, there was a massive amount of support provided both by the community and developers long after the game was released. So i'm expecting the same here. But yeah, i can understand your frustration as not a lot is explained in the official doc's and tutorials.

This means that effectively it takes 15HP of damage to destroy the unit. So if you get a prediction that you will loose 5points it means you will loose 1 unit/str point and 2HP off the second one.

Thank you, Aloo. That explains it. So, the 3/3, or 1/3, or whatever it may be, is a damaged unit.
So, If I have 3 strength, and 1/3, that means I have four total units (3 full strength), and one unit with 1 hit point left? Or does it mean I have three total units and one of them has 1 hit point left, in effect two and 1/3rd units?

If you have 3 strength, statistics for 3/3 = 12 hit Points. Icon for full strength shows 3.
Since you have 1/3, you have 3 hit points or one unit left. Icon for unit strength shows 1.

What you see in predicted results is the maximum output of the attack, right? Or is it some average value?

The predictions is the average. We're looking to add more feedback on this so watch for updates on the combat predictors.

Ah, I see.
So getting 0 | 0 doesn`t automatically mean that the attack will not score a hit and damage a unit (ofcause in case of weapon being able to deal damage to a target). Nice to know.
I`ve heard something of 'instant kills' being a possibility with high enough damage over armor difference. Is that true? Can a 1 strength unit with a 1-attack weapon with 110 power kill more than 1 gretchin?

Yes, but the kill is for the strengh Point.since gretchin have 1HP per Strenghth it will only kill a single gretchin. A Baneblade has 10HP per Strenght, so a "instant kill" does 10HP from that one shot

Makes sence. And actually makes high rate of fire weapons feasible...
I wonder if something that simulates blast weapons will ever be simulated. Like battlecannons having a large area of impact and thus being more effective at grinding infantry. Leman Russes are usually taken for their multiroleness in tabletop game where they can crush vehicles as well as blast large packs of infantry with their battlecannons/demolisher cannons.

I am so confused. I have a unit that says 3 strength, and under it is says 1/3. What does the 3 strength mean, and what does the 1/3 mean, please?
Your explanation says I have one unit left, but why does my unit say 3 strength, then?
This is complicated and not explained by the developers. I keep harping on this, but come on! Explain your game, developers!! Please. Pretty please. I REALLY appreciate the help by everyone on this forum, but it is the developers responsibility to fix this.

Unit is a squad. Strength is a number of the soldiers\vehicles in this squad. Hit Points is a number of wounds 1 member of the squad can soak before to die. So when HP reaches zero 1 member of the squad die and Strengh counter will be redused by one. When Strengh counter reaches zero the whole squad will die and Unit model will be disappeared from the battlefield.
Hope this explanation will help.
